The San Francisco State University Department of Psychology offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Developmental Psychology beginning August 2020.
We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, through diversity, to the excellence of the academic community and that will broaden the department’s strengths in the role of contextual factors such as ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and poverty in lifespan development.
The Psychology Department at San Francisco State University is dedicated to the discovery of knowledge about human behaviors, beliefs, and emotions. We seek to share knowledge with our students and with the greater community. We work in the classroom, research laboratory, and community to provide undergraduate and graduate-level training that emphasizes psychological theory, the scientific method, and the application of psychological knowledge to research and real-world issues. Collectively, we promote an environment of mutual respect, transparency, and an appreciation for culture and diversity while being driven by the SF State Core Values of Community, Courage, Equity, Life of Mind, and Resilience.
At the undergraduate level, this faculty member will be qualified to teach child development, lifespan development, and social/emotional development and may be qualified to teach adolescent development, behavior problems in children, and psychology of aging. At the graduate level, candidates should be qualified to teach in developmental theory, methodology, and courses in their area of specialization. The new hire should also be qualified to teach undergraduate-level composition, research methods and statistics courses required by all Psychology majors. We will seek someone with a strong program of basic or applied research in social-emotional development in childhood or adolescence. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, gender, epigenetics, social-cultural-economic contexts, peer networks and interaction, social cognition, influences of media or technology on development, STEM education, sophisticated developmental methods. Successful candidates should demonstrate flexibility with intersectional perspectives on human development.

The workload primarily includes (1) teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in developmental psychology, (2) conducting an active ongoing program of scholarship or creative works that advances knowledge in the field of one’s specialty, and (3) service contributions to the department, college, and university. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, productive participation on departmental, college, and university-wide committees, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students; supervising graduate student Master’s thesis projects, holding regular office hours, curriculum development and improvement, particularly with regard to student learning outcomes, and remaining current in both subject area and teaching methodologies. •Ph.D. in developmental or educational psychology or child and family studies from an accredited institution. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
•Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students
•Record of teaching contributions in the areas of child and human development;
•Active record of scholarship related to specialty area human development;
•Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, intersectionality, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works;
•Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities;
•Record of contributing to collegial, supportive and collaborative work environments.
Rank and salary:
